Netball Reports 2022
Tuesday, 7 February 2023
Last year’s academic season of netball was unfortunately affected by the pandemic last year with only one fixture being played. This 2021 to 2022 season was the opposite with over 60 fixtures played by the girls winning 66% of their games. Considering some of the girls had never played a contested game and the majority had not played normal rules of Netball for over a year, we as a games department were very proud of their attitude in Netball. The girls were super excited to be back on the court and this is seen in the reports written by the captains below. Before the captains reports, we would like to congratulate the following girls who were selected at the start of the school year in 2021 to play for North East regional performance pathway; Emelia S, Imogen C, and Jessica W.

1st VII Netball
“This year we had 12 games and a total of 3 cancelled. One of our first games was against The Mount where we won 38-17. This was a very competitive game and the girls made some good passes, great goals and interceptions. Austin Friars was one of the most intense games we had over the season. Our defence had to mark tight and put pressure on their attackers. Bethany W played great as our GK, alongside Grace J putting pressure on their goal attack playing over GD. Rosie B and Katherine H also did great scoring 20 goals to their 13.

Dame Allans was another great game. Olivia G playing centre, feeding the ball out to our girls with speed and agility. Ruby A put some great pressure on the opponents, forcing them to make mistakes. Hannah G and Daisy S were smashing it in WA and WD, but unfortunately after a solid performance from Daisy S, she rolled her ankle, so Ruth S stepped it up to play in replacement. She did a great job in the defensive role.

This season has had its ups and downs but we are very proud of not only our results but how well we have grown as a team both on and off the court. We are looking forward to stepping up next year and improving even further. A massive thank you to Mrs Sweeting for being incredible as always, we would not be where we are without her. Floreat Dunelmia.” - Rosie Bolam 1st VII Netball

U15 Girls Netball
“The U15 Netball has had a both challenging yet successful season with many highs and lows. A total of 5 wins this season, each well-deserved from determination and resilience with the most memorable being our win against RGS, nearing the end of our season highlighting the improvements as a team. Against a tough side all girls played their best, with Robyn D. playing well in the centre and added help from Jessica W. playing up.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all highs, with losses predominately at the beginning of the season as we were all progressing and still ‘warming up’. Playing against some tough teams, however, the bus riots back always lightened the mood. We are still yet to not lose against the challenging Durham Johnson side however our match this season certainly closed the goal gap, compared to past matches.

Lastly, I’d like to thank all the team and coaches for a great season. Floreat Dunelmia - Milly Rochester U15 Girls Netball Captain

U14 Girls Netball
“We would just like to start by saying a massive well done to the whole team. Throughout this season they have worked so hard and it has paid off. This year, on the 12th of March, our team competed in the National Schools final in Peterborough. It is the first time any team from Durham School has ever made it to Nationals. This team showed grit and determination. Unfortunately, early on in the tournament, we lost Emelia S as our starting goal attack. But, as a team, we did not lose our heads, this obviously wasn’t ideal but everyone persevered.

The girls played exceptionally and worked so hard. Every person, on and off the court had a great attitude. Everyone was supportive and enthusiastic, especially Miss Sweeting, and everyone performed to the best of their ability. It is hard to believe that netball is only a first sport for a few of us on this team.

Every member of this team has improved vastly this year. Lottie J had amazing holds in the circle. Jessica W got turnover after turnover. Georgia M had great tips and intercepts through the court. Zara S was tight on the opposition. Imogen C showed exceptional agility all over the court along with Sophie Saxton who had excellent feeds into the circle. Hannah T and Chloe J with outstanding accuracy with their shooting even under pressure. Finally, Grace C, Sophia-Marie M, and Darcy H who didn’t get as much court time but when they did play, they made a strong impact on court.

No matter what was happening off the netball court when we were playing, we put aside our differences and adopted a positive attitude and encouraging words through out every game whether that was on the bench or through the court, we were collectively determined to do our best for ourselves and one another. We are so proud of the team and they should all be proud of each other.

On behalf of our team, we wanted to mention Mrs Sweeting and all the other staff and parents who made this season possible. Thank you. Floreat Dunelmia.” Emelia Standford & Jessica Wood – U14 Netball Captains

U12 & U13 Girls Netball
“I’d like to start by saying a big thank you to all the girls in Years 7 and 8, who have put 100% into every performance. Our U13 A defence was very strong with Imogen P, Savannah K, and Olivia T, however our main goal defence was Aroob A, with amazing competitive ability and our opposition having to watch their ankles with her around. Our centre court players always managed to keep the game at a reasonable, yet fast, pace. The players were Charlotte, Freya, Jasmine M, Zia C, and Darcy H, who always managed to fall in the most gracious way. In the final third up front, were myself, Anna R, and Katie O.

We scored many goals, however when missing the simplest of shots, I think our frustration was clear to everyone watching. Our most memorable matches were played at home. One against Barnard Castle, where we won 14-5. We did not expect to win against such a strong Barnard Castle team, however we had quite a few spectators which gave us the confidence and encouragement to win.

Another match against the Mount School we felt as if we were losing, right up until the final whistle, however it was a pleasant surprise to hear the 14-11 score. Our biggest win was away against Hermitage Academy, where we won 31-8. Considering it was our first match playing as a team, I feel we played exceptionally well. Myself and the U13 A team would like to congratulate both the U12 A and B teams who have had some great results, their highest scoring game being against Barnard Castle where the A team won 24-1 and Dame Allan’s where the B team won 17-3.

We’d also like to congratulate the U13 B team for their fantastic season. Their favourite game was actually a tournament that the school hosted in January, despite their efforts they sadly ended up in the lower end of the table however they had a fantastic time and played very well.

Finally, we would all like to thank Mrs Sweeting for coaching us this year and I’d like to say how much I’m looking forward to another competitive year where we can make ourselves proud on the court. Thank you, Floreat Dunelmia.” - Hannah Thompson, U13 Netball Captain
