ODs competing for the Cup

Trevor Berkeley (S, 1956-61) and Kenneth Grainger (L, 1993-97) discovered recently they were bidding against each other for a old Durham School cup on Ebay. After sorting that out, they pair met in person when Kenneth donated the cup to Durham School Archives, where Trevor volunteers.

The ODs featured on the cup are:

Thomas Wardle Asquith Swallow 
Born 10th May 1903, son of W.A. Swallow, Ivy House, New Seaham, county Durham. Entered Durham School September 1917, School House; left December 1920 (Mod. Low. v); farming in Rhodesia; formerly farming pupil with J.C. Hutchinson, O.D. (uncle), at Bamburgh Hall; superintendent, Shell-Mex, Ltd since 1928. Lived in Seaton, St.Aidan’s, Seahouses, Northumberland.  

Geoffrey Middleton Blyth Martin
Born 3rd November 1903, son of W.H. Blyth Martin, J.P., D.L., Town Clerk of Dundee, Taymount, Dundee. Entered the School in September 1917, School House; King’s Scholars 1917; School Monitor; Senior House Rune 1921; Sports Challenge Cup 1921; left December 1921 (vi). Studied music in London and the continent; musical profession.

George Gilhespy Dunn 
Born 5th September, 1904, son of R. Dunn, J.P., Lindum House, Gateshead. Entered Durham School January 1918; Langley House; 2nd Crew (bow) 1921, 22; captain of Gymnasium 1921-3; Gym medal, 1921, 22, 23; left April 1923 (Mod. vi). Administrative solicitor 1928; partner in firm of Messrs Maughan and Hall, Lloyds Bank Chambers, Newcastle-upon-Tyne since 1929; Captain D.L.I., Killed in Action, France, May 1940. Lived in 19 Adeline Gardens, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Roy Eltringham Digby Nelson
Born 19th October, 1902, son of D. Nelson, Westoe, Humbledon View, Sunderland. Entered Durham School September 1917, School House, 3rd crew (bow) 1921; XV, 1920; left July 1921 (Mod. vi); chartered accountant, with Messrs Price, Waterhouse and Co. (six years); now partner in firm of Messrs Brown and Piper, chartered accountants, Sunderland; played for Sunderland R.F.C. 1921-5. Died 27th January, 1969

Charles Percy Ingledew
Born 25th December 1904, son of C.M. Ingledew, 45 Highbury, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Entered Durham School September 1918, School House; 1st crew (cox) 1920; Senior Steeplechase 1922; left May 1923 (Mod. Low. v); rubber planting in Perak, F.M.S. 1925-30; with Nat. Prov. Bank; now in business in Johannesburg. Died 1961.
